It’s a sure sign that if you haven’t heard of the ever popular Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, you have probably been living under a rock. As each day passes, the series only continues to grow in popularity, with readers all over the world falling in love with the love story of Edward and Bella.
“It’s not like any other love story. It’s so different, so unexpected,” said Brittany Jardine, a freshman veterinary technology major. “The fans love the connection Bella and Edward had from the very beginning. I think most of us envy that… we all want that kind of relationship.”
Set in the rainy town of Forks, Washington, Twilight is the story of Isabella (Bella) Swan and her dangerous romance with the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen. Twilight is the first in a series of four novels, the following three being New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.
The series has garnered quite the fan base, and its popularity has been compared to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. “I have probably read all four books over ten times,” said Carley Hartman, a junior psychology major. Hartman is a dedicated fan who admits to having a Twilight poster, calendar, puzzles, and multiple magazines, guides, and other related paraphernalia.
When the Twilight movie was released on November 21, 2008, Hartman was at the midnight showing; she pre-ordered the DVD, which was released on March 21, 2009. She also has the movie companion, the Director’s Cut book, and the movie soundtrack.
When asked how the movie compares to the book, however, Hartman has to admit that the book prevails. “There was so much more detail [in the book],” said Hartman. “There were scenes that I wish the movie would have had in it. I really wanted to see certain parts of the book the way I imagined them.”
Jardine agrees. “The book is absolutely better than the movie,” she said. “Obviously the book describes a lot more than the movie ever could. I do feel like they did a great job with the movie, though. I don’t think they could have picked anyone better to play Edward or Bella.”
The enthusiasm that Twilight fans have toward the series has contributed greatly to the books’ success. Readers recommend the book to their family and friends, and the cycle continues. “I got my sister and one of my friends hooked,” said Hartman. “It took a while but I couldn’t stop talking about it, so they decided to cave in and read it. Now they’re hooked, too!”
It was word of mouth that caused Jardine to read the series. “I first heard about Twilight from my best friend back home,” said Jardine. “I’ve never been a big book reader but she told me that I would love this book – that it’s a must read – and she was right. I fell in love with it and with Edward. We got my sister to read it and 90% of my friends have read it, too. Now all of our parents are reading them and falling in love with them just as much as we did.”
